In cases of hereditary or other visual diseases, central visual acuity may decrease. An exact recognition of objects is then no longer possible at affected areas of the retina due to impaired photoreceptors.
Magnifying aids such as magnifiers or screen readers can help if there are enough intact photoreceptors in the central retinal area. This way, enlarged writing can be recognized coherently again. The appropriate choice of aids must be determined on an individual basis.
